deposits and returns in Hongkong as heretofore, and
they are subject to the control of the Court in Hongkong,
If however it is desired that a China company
should make its deposits and returns in Shanghai, an
addition to Article 3 (3) to cover acts done under the
Life Insurance Ordinance would be necessary and to give
the Court direct power it should be added to 14 (1);
or to cover both these Ordinances should be included
in the term "the Ordinance".
No doubt a great deal can be done through the
Registrar in Hongkong, but I appreciate the desire of
those responsible for the probity of British companies
in China, to have direct control of the fulfilment of
their obligations by such companies, and of their own
register on which a China Life Insurance Company would
be inscribed. It would be better that the Registrar in
Shanghai should have the power to strike a company off
the register of China companies and the Supreme Court for
China should control this power than that the regis-
trar in Hongkong should have to be invoked. There
are other powers as to winding up which it would be
as well to be able to exercise here.
